The Power of Faith

An intellect confounded yet a trusting sense
of presence and of ultimate purpose.
- Yann Martel in The Life of Pi

Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
(Dictionary description)

What is faith? The description varies depending on who you ask. I personally don't have a desire to determine for others what description is "correct", but I resonated with the descriptions noted above. The first comes from Yann Martel, a Canadian author who is well known for writing Life of Pi, a fantasy adventure novel which finds the key character, an Indian boy from Pondicherry, exploring issues of spirituality and practicality from the time he is very young. In the book, he manages to survive 227 days after a shipwreck, while stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger. Hmmm ... what degree of faith did he have to survive this adventure?

We can have faith (or a lack of) in all sorts of ways. We can have faith in ourselves and our abilities, faith in others to act with integrity, in the media to report the truth, in the honor system to place a dollar in the basket when you pick up that bottle of water. For those who have chosen specific religious paths (some not all), have a deep connection to faith. Many have faith that God, or what/whoever that higher power may be, is with us to guide, protect and love us. On the other end of the spectrum, do Atheists have faith? Faith that there is no God? Quite the interesting topic, yes?

I have never questioned my faith, but I find myself in the midst of expanding my understanding of faith to further comprehend what faith means for other people. I have embarked on a new learning experience and am attending One Spirit Learning Alliance
( http://onespiritinterfaith.org/ ), a two-year training program that results in ordination as an ordained inner-faith minister. One Spirit's mission reads: One Spirit is an interspiritual institute that offers in-depth experiential education and Professional Training to:

Teach and Explore the common core of ancient and emerging human wisdom
Train and Ordain interfaith/interspiritual ministers
Prepare spiritual leaders, counselors and clergy to serve diverse communities; and
Support and Nurture individuals' ongoing spiritual development, growth and service to the world[1]

Raised Presbyterian (and enjoyed it very much), I am so curious to see what I will learn about other traditions. With each month comes the opportunity to study and understand different paths. Last month was Buddhism (I like Buddha's saying and explanation of "I am awake", and tried and appreciated walking meditation for the first time) and this month we are studying Hinduism (can't wait to see what I will learn on this ride).

How cool is this? As a person who has always been fascinated by the various religious and spiritual paths people choose to walk, I have been invigorated by the opportunity to shift from my solo practice of studying to a collective energy working with other curious, like-minded, accepting people who also have a desire to better understand others who we share this journey of life with. Who will I encounter? How will new knowledge shape my way of thinking? What assumptions do I have that will be corrected? I can't say precisely what I will encounter, but I have climbed aboard for the ride. A little nervous - yes (it's been a long time since I was in school and we have lot of reading and homework, study group obligations and suggested fieldtrips), but I am mostly grateful - for taking time for myself; to explore and to learn about others. Becoming an ordained minister will be an outcome that I will appreciate, but honestly, that is not why I enrolled in the program. I enrolled because I believe that the more I understand others, the more compassionate and I understanding I will become and I have "faith" that this journey will take me there.

So what do you have faith in? Take time to contemplate. Do you have faith in yourself? In man(woman)kind? In what the future holds? Having faith, something to believe in can bring great comfort and peace of mind. Embrace your faith, whatever it may be. And if you have given up faith, I encourage you to invite it back home. Give it/her/him another chance. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

Quotes About Faith

Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.
Mother Teresa

Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, take the first step.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

As your faith is strengthened you will find that there is no longer the need to have a sense of control, that things will flow as they will and that you will flow with them, to your great delight and benefit.
Emmanuel Teney

Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe.

Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.
Saint Augustine

Faith is a knowledge within the heart, beyond the reach of proof.
Khalil Gibran

A faith is a necessity to a man. Woe to him who believes in nothing.
Victor Hugo

If patience is worth anything, it must endure to the end of time. And a living faith will last in the midst of the blackest storm.
Mahatma Gandhi
