The
Power of Living In the Moment
What If Syndrome
What would
it feel like to live your life appreciative of
"the moment" and not spend time pondering how
life would be different if you had made
different decisions in the past? This is the
"what if" syndrome. What if you'd taken a
different job five years ago or moved south
instead of north or dated that really nice
person who you didn't give much of a chance? You
imagine you'd be working in a job that survived
the economic crisis, living in a warm climate
and being doted on by the best and most
nurturing partner ever! Well, "maybe" this would
have been the case, but we just don't know. How
could we? Many of us find ourselves swirling in
"what if" mode. I've certainly been there. I
think the course of action, if you find yourself
in that headspace, is to shake if off. Literally
if need be. Stand up and shake it out from head
to toe. Return to the here and now, stand in
your "current" truth and embrace where you are.
Challenges find their way to most of us, but we
can find something to appreciate about "today"
and I believe this is the path to appreciating
life and embracing the moment.

Time Like the Present
How Do I Live In the Moment?
There are
a number of things you can do to live in the
moment, which can provide you with the
foundation for making the best out of life. All
of these suggestions can energize you and help
you celebrate the gift of living in the now.
Feel
the Breeze
We spend a
lot of time getting from point A to point B, so
as you walk from your front door to the car or a
parking lot to the store or a stroll in the park
- feel the "breeze". This is a simple and
excellent way to be in the moment. You will feel
alive, alert and absolutely present.
Be
Forgiving
Nothing
succeeds in preventing us from experiencing the
present like fixating on the past. If you have
permitted someone else's behavior to impact your
life in a negative way and you spend time
thinking about it, "today" is the day to let it
go. Don't give the past situation your power,
time, energy and attention. Forgive and move on.
Celebrate You
When was
the last time you set aside some time to
celebrate and take care of you? Whether it's an
hour to enjoy reading a book, 15 minutes to
enjoy the sunset or walk by the water or a
weekend getaway, you deserve to honor and
celebrate who you are. Give yourself permission
and just do it!
See
What You See
Most
likely, you take the same path to and from your
destinations - going to work, to the library or
to pick your kids up from school. The next time
you travel that route, really pay attention to
your surroundings. I bet you will discover a
flowerbed, interesting looking building or even
a billboard with a thought-provoking saying or
visual on it that you never noticed before. This
is a fun exercise that results in appreciating
the moment.
Appreciate the Ordinary and Attitude of
Gratitude
Washing
dishes, sweeping the floor, filing office
paperwork or doing the laundry don't often rise
to the top of the "wow, what a lot of fun"
category list. However, being conscious and in
the moment as you do these activities can
contribute a great deal to appreciating the
moment. What a gift that you have dishes to wash
(and food to eat), a space to live in (thus a
floor to sweep), an office in which to file your
papers and clothes to wear. We can always find
something to be grateful for and when we do,
living in the moment becomes that much sweeter.
Start
the Day With an Affirmation
The power
of affirmative words is truly amazing. Words can
uplift, inspire and motivate. They can set the
tone for your attitude and be a catalyst for
positive change. So as you live in the moment,
do so with words that can move you forward in a
loving and nurturing way.
Lend
a Helping Hand
Helping
others is a wonderful way to connect to the here
and now; you feel good and you are assisting
someone else who could use a helping hand.
Whether you are volunteering someplace on a
regular basis or holding the door open for
someone in need at the grocery store, feel the
impact you are having, know that you are making
a difference and appreciate being present enough
to "feel" being in the "now".
